Centenary tabs four to golf rosters

SHREVEPORT – Four newcomers have joined Centenary’s golf squad as head coach Emlyn Aubrey added three Ladies and one Gent to his rosters for 2012-13.

Chris Cates joins the Gents program and Mary Alton, Jessica Thigpen and Jamie Wright will tee off for the Ladies this year.

Cates is a 6-foot-2 Parkway High School graduate who helped the Panthers to a District Championship in 2009-10. He posted an 83 in the Region Class 5A Golf Tournament. During his tenure at Parkway, Cates also lettered in band and baseball while being the third man on the varsity golf team. The Panthers golf team qualified for the state golf tournament in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

Cates also garnered much success off the field. He was named to the LHSAA Class 5A All-Academic team his senior year. He was Wendy’s Heisman for Parkway and was a member of Beta, Red Jacket, Bossier Youth Leadership, NHS, and was the HOBY Ambassador for the Panthers, among other honors. Cates plans on completing his Biology degree at Centenary and then wants to attend LSU Health and Science Center to complete his medical degree.

Alton, a Fannett, Texas, native played golf all four years as a Longhorn while lettering in volleyball for two and track and cross country for one each. She gleaned MVP honors on the golf team for three of her four years.

The Hampshire-Fannett High School product helped lead the Longhorns to the volleyball playoffs one year, basketball for two year and made golf regionals all four years. The 5-6 freshman plans to earn a finance degree at Centenary before pursuing a master’s in finance upon completion.

Jessica Thigpen joins the Ladies golf team after graduating from Calvary Baptist Academy. The Bethany, La., Native was captain for Calvary her final three years, helping the Cavaliers to a second-place finish at regionals her sophomore year before posting consecutive third-place finishes in her junior and senior years. She placed ninth, 10th and 13th at the state tournament in her sophomore, junior and senior years, respectively.

In her final year at Calvary, Thigpen was the school’s Wendy’s High School Heisman and Student of the Year nominee. She held many offices and honors including TOPS, National Young Leadership Conference and was invited to attend the National American Miss Pageant. At Centenary, Thigpen plans on majoring in Pre-Vet.

Jamie Wright comes to Centenary after earning four golf letters and three soccer letters at Holy Savior Menard High School in Alexandria. Wright graduated as Valedictorian after posting a 4.0 GPA and tabbed Student of the Year honors, the Tulane Book Award, American Citizenship Award, Fellowship of Christian Athletes President, among other honors. Wright helped the Lady Eagles golf team to regional championships in two seasons and runner-up honors for two years.

Individually, Wright earned Division III All Freshman State First-Team honors for soccer and was an Academic All-State selection for golf. She was the team captain for four years and was a Finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman.
