KERRVILLE, Texas – Four seniors will make their final deuts Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as the Gents take on Schreiner, followed by another road contest at Texas Lutheran Monday at 2 p.m. After the two games away from Mayo Field, the Gents make their home opener Sept. 8 against Howard Payne at 7 p.m. Adam Ghaemmaghami, Spencer Nickerson, Robbie Ramirez and John Seat lead the Gents into the season opener after the 2-0 loss in the Mayor’s Cup Monday afternoon. Centenary took 14 shots, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Ghaemmaghami and Nickerson accounted for six of the 14 shots. Ghaemmaghami took four while Nickerson fired two, one on goal. Centenary and Schreiner’s 2011 contest was decided by a late-game goal by Kellen Klaus, his first collegiate goal. Klaus rebounded a miss by Marcos Rodriguez. That’s the same type of hustle and collective team play head coach David Orr is expecting this weekend. “We didn’t get a full week of practice because of the weather, but we have to fine tune some things,” Orr said. “Most of it is about everyone getting on the same page. We’re technically and tactically efficient, and physically we’re OK when it comes to our fitness. It’s about getting on the same page with the new faces. It does take some time to get cohesive. It’s like when you finish each other’s sentences.” The Mayor’s Cup, although an exhibition, set up an optimistic season debut for Orr and his Gents, who are anticipating their second match with Schreiner in as many seasons. “We’re looking at this weekend as a very positive weekend,” Orr said. “I’m excited. I know the guys are too. Schreiner gave us a tough game last year. I know it’ll be a competitive match. They’re a good team. It’ll be a good match for us and I’m expecting a good result.” |
