Shreveport - Morgan Dorsey has been named head coach of the Centenary women's flag football team when it begins competition in the spring of 2027, Director of Athletics and Recreation David Orr announced.
Dorsey, who just completed her sixth season as head coach of the women's soccer program, will guide the Ladies in what will become the 19th varsity sport sponsored by the conference.
The announcement of the SCAC sponsoring the sport was previously announced in October. See full release here: https://www.gocentenary.com/general/2025-26/releases/20251008r1j1qj
"I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to begin building this program," said Dorsey.
"Flag football is growing at a rapid pace, and I'm looking forward to sharing my love and experience with our student-athletes. Women's flag football is coming to Centenary at the perfect time, as interest in women's sports continues to rise nationwide.
"With the support of professional leagues, the NCAA, and high school organizations, young women have more opportunities than ever before. I'm eager to build on that momentum and make women's flag football a proud part of Centenary's outstanding athletics tradition. This is a major step forward in empowering female student-athletes, and Shreveport/Bossier has a huge pool of young women who are ready for their opportunity to play."
Flag football has been one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Nationally, more than 200 collegiate varsity and club teams are expected to compete in 2026, with nearly 40 more launching programs in 2027. Flag football also has been added as a sport for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics made a recommendation to all three NCAA divisions earlier this year to sponsor legislation to add flag football to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program. The vote to add flag football to the program will take place at the NCAA Convention in January 2026. Once in the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program, flag football must have a minimum of 40 total schools across all divisions sponsoring the sport at the varsity level and meet the minimum contest and participation requirements to be considered for NCAA championship status.
The SCAC sponsored a women's flag football showcase event last spring which was hosted by Concordia University (Texas) and attracted teams from Centenary, Concordia, Hendrix and Schreiner. The success of that event, along with the growing interest in the sport, solidified the league's decision to move forward with women's flag as its next championship sport.
