Lorman, Miss. - The Centenary women's soccer team will face the Alcorn State University Lady Braves in a non-conference contest on Wednesday set for 6 p.m. at Spinks-Casem Stadium.
The Ladies (0-2) dropped a 3-1 decision to the East Texas Baptist University Tigers in its home opener on Monday evening in a non-conference contest at Mayo Field while Alcorn State (1-3) fell 9-0 at Lamar on Sunday. Centenary will be playing its second road match of the season after falling at Southern in its season opener, 5-0, on Sept. 3 in Baton Rouge.
ETBU (2-0) scored first in Monday's match and that lead held until halftime and then Centenary senior MF Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) tied the match at 1-1 just eight minutes into the second half as she received a pass near the right sideline from fellow senior MF Veronica Dougherty (McAllen, Texas) and rifled the ball into the far left corner of the net past ETBU goalkeeper Claire Montondon for the tying score. The goal was McDonald's first of the season and seventh of her career.
The Tigers however answered that score just over a minute later and then scored a third goal in the 73rd minute for the 3-1 final score. Centenary GK, freshman Madison Ersoff (Shreveport) played all 90 minutes and made eight saves.
The Ladies and Lady Braves are meeting for the third time after Centenary posted consecutive shutouts over Alcorn at home in the 2002 and 2003 seasons but the teams will meet for the first time in Lorman, Miss. Centenary remains on the road next weekend to face St. Thomas on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. and then wraps up the weekend versus Sul Ross State University in a neutral site contest at Noon in Richardson, Texas.
