Men's Basketball
The Gents had one of their best seasons in program history as they finished 18-9 overall and 10-6 in conference play and tied the division III era (2012-present) single-season record for wins. Centenary earned the No. 3 seed in the SCAC Tournament as the Maroon and White made their 10th-straight appearance in the event where they defeated Southwestern in the quarterfinals before falling to host and No. 2 seed Trinity in the semifinals.
Centenary, as has become the norm under head coach Chris Dorsey, finished the season as one of the top defensive clubs in the country in division III. The Gents finished the regular season ranked 21st nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 62.8 PPG, and in the top 55 in both field goal percentage defense and 3-point FG % defense. The Gents ranked 20th nationally in turnover margin as they forced their opponents into an average of 19.9/game during the regular season.
Centenary also proved to be a very balanced team on both sides of the ball, as the Maroon and White finished the regular season in the top five in the conference in turnover margin, scoring defense, free throw %, steals, FG % defense, 3-point FG % defense, scoring margin, blocked shots, and 3-point FG made. The Gents finished the season holding 23 of their 27 opponents to 70 points or less, 60 or less 11 times, and to 55 or less 10 times.
Senior F Seth Thomas (Kilgore, Texas) capped his stellar career with the Gents by being named to the D3hoops.com All Region Team, earning a spot on the Region 10 Second Team. He was one of seven players to make the Second Team and one of only 12 players to land on the Region 10 Team in the entire county.
He was the Gents' leading scorer and rebounder, named First-Team All-SCAC, received votes for Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, named to the 2023 SCAC Championship All-Tournament Team, recorded seven double-doubles and was named the SCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week three times during the regular season.
He reached double figures 23 times this season and did so in 17-straight games from Nov. 26-Feb. 4. Thomas joined the 1,000-point club on Feb. 9 in a home win over John Melvin University as he is now one of just 36 in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark. He joined the 500-rebound club on Jan. 29 against Texas Lutheran, as became just the 19th player in program history to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds in a career.
Freshman G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas), junior G Braeden Board (Rayne, La.), and senior G Tykeem Singleton (Fort Worth, Texas) joined Thomas on the All-SCAC Team as all three earned Honorable-Mention honors and Beverly also landed on the All-Freshman Team.
Beverly turned in a stellar rookie season as he reached double figures seven times and averaged 8.0 PPG – fourth on the team. Beverly also averaged 22.9 minutes/game, good for fifth on the team. He scored in double figures in three of the final four games of the regular season and scored a career-high 19 points at home versus Dallas on Dec. 30.
Board finished the season as the Gents' third-leading scorer (8.3 PPG) and reached double digits nine times, highlighted by a career-high 25 points against St. Thomas on Feb. 14 and recorded one double-double. He ranked in the top 30 in the conference in scoring and in the top 15 in FT %, blocked shots, defensive rebounds, and steals. He was also the Gents' third leading rebounder, averaging 4.9/game.
Singleton reached double figures 13 times this past season and was the Gents' second-leading scorer (9.2 PPG) and rebounder (5.0 RPG). Her recorded a pair of double-doubles and finished in the top 30 in scoring in the SCAC as well as in the top 20 in rebounding and top 10 in offensive rebounds. He averaged 12.5 points in the Gents' two SCAC Tournament games, nailed six treys and went 5-6 at the free throw line.
Sharp-shooting senior G Kile Mingo (Cypress, Texas) finished his career with 177 treys, as he is now in seventh place all-time in program history. He hit his 172nd to tie former Gent Andrew Wisniewski on Jan. 10 at home against St. Thomas and went on to make five more during the season to take over seventh place.
Junior G Coby Harris (Lafayette, La.) was one of just eight SCAC men's basketball student-athletes to be named to the College Sports Communicators 2022 Academic All-District ®Team. This prestigious national award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on court and in the classroom. Junior G Chrys Jackson (North Las Vegas, Nev.) was selected as the Gents' representative on the SCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship Team.
Centenary has now finished .500 or better in all six seasons under Dorsey as the Gents have established themselves as one of the most successful programs in the conference under his direction, winning 55 regular-season conference games and their 38 wins from 2017-21 led the conference in that span. The Gents are now an impressive 35-19 in their last 54 regular-season conference games dating back to Jan. 25, 2020.
Men's Swimming
A new era in the program began this past season as Thomas Radam took over as head coach of the Gents and longtime coach Butch Jordan served as assistant coach. The Gents finished seventh at the SCAC Championships and tallied 73 points.
Junior Antonio Barbee (Plaquemine, La.) had an impressive season with six runner-up finishes, 13 top-five finishes, and 16 Top 10s. Freshman Jameson Feeney (Shreveport, La.) turned in an impressive rookie season with three individual wins, three runner-up finishes, and a total of 11 top-five's.
Junior Aiden Peterkin (Zachary, La.) was named to the 2022-23 Academic All-District® Men's Swimming & Diving Team by the College Sports Communicators. The team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the pool and in the classroom. Peterkin also recorded eight top-five finishes this past season which included a pair of runner-up finishes. He was also chosen as the Gents' representative on the SCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship Team.
Women's Basketball
The Ladies finished 3-22 overall and 3-13 in SCAC play. Despite the Ladies' struggles this past season, they landed three players on the all-conference team - Freshman G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.), sophomore G Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.), and sophomore G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.).
The three All-SCAC selections are the most in six seasons and the Ladies were once again a stingy defensive team as they held 12 of their 25 opponents to 70 points or less in a game this season and six to 65 or fewer.
Barrow, who earned Honorable-Mention distinction, was one of the top rookies in the conference as she averaged 7.9 PPG and reached double figures eight times. She shot 40.7 % from the floor and also averaged 3.8 rebounds/game, 1.8 assists/game and 1.3 steals/game.
Drumgo was the Ladies' top scorer, averaging 9.1 PPG and reached double figures 12 times and did so in seven of her last eight games. She also ranked third on the team in rebounding (4.7/game). Jones reached double figures eight times during the season and was second on the team in scoring (8.6 PPG) and was the leading rebounder (8.2/game). She recorded four double-doubles during the season and posted nine games with 10+ rebounds. She grabbed a career-high 21 boards in a 102-101 loss to Birmingham-Southern which are the fourth-most in a single game in program history.
The 101 points are the most that the Ladies have ever scored in a loss, as the previous program record was 86 against Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 17, 2005. The 203 combined points also broke the previous record of 181 done twice before and most recently in that 95-86 loss to SFA in 2005.
Senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) scored a career-high 33 points in the game, which is tied for the third-most in a single game in program history. Bagwell grabbed 16 rebounds and was 13-23 from the floor in 35 minutes as her 13 field goals made are tied for the second-most in a single game in program history and her 21 attempts are tied for the number eight all-time record. Bagwell was also chosen as the Ladies' representative on the SCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship Team.
Barrow, Drumgo, and Jones all finished in the top 25 in the conference in scoring while Jones was the league's second-leading rebounder and Drumgo finished 15th. All three ranked in the top 15 in the league in free throw %, Barrow was in the top 15 in FG %, and Jones ranked 15th in assists. Jones and Drumgo finished in the top 12 in steals, and Jones was 11th in blocked shots. Jones ranked third in both defensive and offensive rebounds and played the second-most minutes of any player in the conference.
Women's Swimming
A new era in the program began this past season as Thomas Radam took over as head coach of the Ladies and longtime coach Butch Jordan served as assistant coach. The Ladies finished seventh at the SCAC Championships in February, earning 221 total points.
Sophomore Madeline Vacula (Belton, Texas) highlighted the event, as she earned All-SCAC honors for the second season in a row and won the 1650 free in a personal-best time of 17:55.66. The super sophomore now owns 24 individual wins in her career with 17 coming this past season. Her 1650 time is the second-fastest in school history (D1 or D3) and she also owns all-time top-10 times in the 500 free and 1,000 free. She was named the SCAC Women's Swimmer of the Week once during the past season.
Centenary had five seniors swim this past season - senior Isabella Brown (Metairie, La.), senior Christine Goodman (Alexandria, La.), senior Katie Malicoat (Wichita, Kan.), senior Camryn Hebert (Youngsville, La.), and senior Bryn Jenkins (Houston, Texas).
Goodman was named the Ladies' representative on the 2022-23 SCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship Team, Jenkins was named the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week which recognizes the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
Goodman, Hebert, and Jenkins were each named to the 2022-23 Academic All-District® Women's Swimming & Diving Team by the College Sports Communicators. The team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the pool and in the classroom.
