Shreveport - Four Centenary teams were all in action last week, including one team competing for the first time. Let's take a look back and recap all of it here.
Women's Golf:
The Ladies, in preparation for the beginning of their fall season competition next week, faced Millsaps College in a dual match last Monday at Querbes Park Golf Club. Centenary finished second to the Majors, falling in a 5-0 sweep, but the experience of true competition leading up to the Ladies' first tournament was very valuable and needed. Seniors Abigail Hayes (Plano, Texas), and Lindsay Strohm (McKinney, Texas) along with sophomore Madison Wing (Shreveport, La.) and freshman Kiley Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) all competed.
Centenary begins its season a week from Monday in the Rhodes Classic held at Mirimichi Golf Course in Millington, Tenn. The Ladies released their 2021-22 schedule this weekend and you ucan see it here: https://www.gocentenary.com/sports/wgolf/2021-22/releases/20210926ppx5sl
Volleyball:
The Ladies were very busy this past week as they played five matches and began Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this past Saturday. Centenary recorded straight set sweeps on consecutive nights at home over Grambling and Louisiana College on Sept. 21 and 22 as the Maroon and White extended their season-high winning streak to five matches. The Ladies then defeated Dallas Christian College on the road last Friday, 3-1, to notch their sixth-straigt win. Entering the match versus the Crusaders on Friday, the Ladies were riding a 15-set unbeaten streak after recording sweeps over Williams Baptist and Jarvis Christian prior to the victories over Grambling and Louisiana College. Centenary then opened the match by winning sets one and two to extend the unbeaten streak to 17 sets.
Centenary fell in a pair of SCAC matches on Saturday to Dallas (3-0) and Austin College (3-1) in Irving, Texas, but the Ladies are still off to one of their best starts to a season in the division III era (2011-present). The six-game winning streak is the second-best in the D3 era, just one shy of the seven in a row won by the 2011 squad. The Ladies (9-8, 0-2 SCAC) also have the second-best record through 17 games in the span, just behind the 2011 team wich started 10-7 and finished 14-14. The record for wins in a single season in he D3 era is 18 in 2018.
The Ladies will play a pair of non-conference matches on Tuesday, Sept. 28 in East Texas as they will face LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist. The match against the YellowJackets of LeTourneau is set for 3 p.m. in Longview and then they finish off the multi-match day with a 7 p.m. match versus the Tigers of ETBU in Marshall. Centenary then returns to conference play this coming weekend as the Maroon and White play host to 10 matches over two days, Friday Oct. 1 and Saturday, Oct. 2, with SCAC rivals Austin College, Dallas, Schreiner, Southwestern, and Trinity coming to town.
Men's Soccer:
The Gents hit the road this past weekend for a pair of matches in Texas, facing Texas Lutheran in Seguin on Friday night and wrapping up with a contest at Southwestern on Sunday in Georgetown. Centenary fell 4-1 to TLU and 2-0 to the Pirates of Southwestern. The matches, despite being against SCAC opponents, did not count as conference matches as league play does not begin until next weekend. Senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) returned from an injury which caused him to miss two matches and played all 180 minutes this past weekend. He had an impressive match on Sunday versus the Pirates as he made seven saves, which are a season high for Borchalli, one more than the six he recorded on Sept. 10 versus Ozarks at home. Centenary, despite the two road losses this weekend, is still an impressive 14-7-3 in the last 24 matches. The Gents remain away from home to open conference play next weekend as they face Trinity in San Antonio on Friday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. followed by an Oct. 3 match at Schreiner in Kerrville, Texas at 3 p.m. Centenary's next home match will be Friday, Oct. 8 versus St. Thomas at 7:30 p.m.
Women's Soccer:
The Ladies also faced Texas Lutheran and Southwestern over the weekend, and fell 1-0 on Friday to the Bulldogs and 2-0 on Sunday to the Pirates. The Maroon and White, despite dropping both matches this past weekend, have still won six of their last nine non-conference road matches dating back to the 2019 season. Centenary remains away from home next weekend to open conference play on Friday, Oct. 1 at Trinity in San Antonio, Texas followed by an Oct. 3 match at Schreiner in Kerrville, Texas. The Ladies' next home match will be Friday, Oct. 8 versus St. Thomas at 5 p.m.
