Centenary Ladies Gym Talk: Feb. 17 Edition
Hello Ladies’ fans, it’s your girl Xi pie back at it to catch you up on the last two week’s of gym talk.
Hello Ladies' fans, it's your girl Xi pie back at it to catch you up on the last two week's of gym talk.
The first week proved to be a challenge for the Ladies, it was our first meet of the season against TWU and Air Force in the Gold Dome, and many of us came out of quarantine and straight to the competition floor!
In regard to the meet, the Ladies had some bumps but continue to get better. It was challenging putting up line-ups with many of us having been quarantined at some point in January. But as always, this team is resilient, and we went out there and did our best. It was a start to our season, which we are grateful for, and we know we have bigger things to come. Big shoutout to sophomore Lauryn stiff on her debut, after being out of competition for close to two years!
Last week was spent gearing up for another exciting meet at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. We faced off with the University of Oklahoma and TWU. Going with the theme of the year, we were not sure we would even be able to travel to Fort Worth for the meet. There was bad weather across the south and the roads were not good, and there was a threat of more weather the day of the meet.
That did not deter the Ladies from having a great week of practice and really honing in on making corrections from our first meet. We spent the week working on getting more routines under our belts, doing some upgrades, and building our confidence. We knew this meet would be exciting, competing with Oklahoma and our friendly rivals TWU. Not only that, but it was on podium and there would be fans allowed. So thankfully there was a window of quiet weather and we were able to safely travel to and from Fort Worth!
Sooo, speaking of having fans! Many of our parents and families braved the bad weather and traveled to Fort Worth to watch us compete for the first time this year! Of course, we had to follow Covid protocol so no one was allowed to hang out with their families, we could only talk with them from a distance…while not what we would like to be happening, at least we got to see them (sort of, we all had masks on), and they had the pleasure of watching their favorite gymnasts compete. Shout out to our class of 2019 who came to support us!
The meet went great, we improved our team score by 4 points from our first meet. It was awesome to be competing in front of a crowd again, the excitement is just so much different! There were a lot of great routines form this meet and we had 8 career high scores! Shout out to the vault team for a great rotation and especially Kendall Sanders and Kendall Huff for their career high scores of 9.75. Also, shout out to the bar squad for not counting a fall and doing some high flying releases this week! Beam and floor are coming along, with improvements made on both events from our first meet – we have more people coming into those line-ups as they get more gym time under their belts.
Last week proved to be especially hard for myself, as I lost my dearest coach from my JO club, John Charizick. John taught me from level 4 all the way to level 10. This weekend I wanted to truly make him proud showing off all the amazing things he taught me, not only the gymnastics but the character-building traits too. Attached is my favorite poem he gave to me.
This is your girl Xi pie signing off for this week's gym talk. See you next week with more from the Ladies!
