Centenary Ladies Gym Talk: March 3 Edition
Hello Ladies fans! Sophomore Kendall Huff, aka K3, here, to catch everyone up on our busy weekend!
Hello Ladies fans! Sophomore Kendall Huff, aka K3, here, to catch everyone up on our busy weekend! I'll start where my roomie, Rose, left off last week. As you may remember, we spent Sunday through Wednesday in Tyler, TX, practicing at Texas East Gymnastics. Another big shout out to them for their kindness in opening their doors for us! We returned to Centenary Wednesday afternoon with just enough time to wash clothes and pack. Thank goodness the water was finally working again when we got back on campus!
Thursday morning we loaded up the bus and headed out for Cape Girardeau - the home of Southeast Missouri State (SEMO). We were ready to get back into competition and our double meet weekend. On the way, we stopped and visited Sylvia Keiter's place of rest. Her mom and stepdad met us there, so we got to visit Big Syl (our guardian angel), hear a couple stories about her, then our teammate Jenny Jackson said a prayer over Sylvia and the team before we left. It was fitting we were able to stop and visit Syl because we were dedicating Friday's meet in her honor. Everything is always all for Big Syl!
Friday morning some of us attended class remotely before heading to the Show Me Center for our meet. It was nice to compete in an arena where fans were allowed to attend, including many of our parents! A competition without fans is very strange and we were so happy they were there cheering us on. Especially after the last two weeks of craziness! Anyway, we were very excited to be back on the competition floor! We wore teal in honor of Big Syl on Friday night. Friday night's competition was against SEMO and Illinois State. Things did not go exactly as planned but we pushed through and several Ladies showed off some new skills! Kendall Sanders added a double layout dismount to her Bar routine, while Si-Si Ponder and Rylie Molina competed beam for the first time this season.
Our senior Si-Si has been working hard to add events and we were so excited to see her on beam! Leilani Johnson competed on floor for the first time this season after having surgery in November and absolutely rocked it! Freshman Izzy Plaza exhibited on vault and landed a beautiful Tsukahara layout. It was fantastic to see these Ladies in action! Saturday was a fun, relaxing day. We actually went bowling and I was very proud to break a score of 100! Then we visited the Cape Girardeau Nature Center and hiked to a sink hole. After a fun afternoon of team bonding we returned to the hotel for study time and rest.
Sunday, we had to be up and ready early because our second meet of the weekend started at 1:00. This meet was Pink Out for breast cancer. We were determined to push past Friday and compete like we know we can. And we did, adding 5 points over our score on Friday! Big shoutout to my big sisters Kendall Sanders for winning the all-around and Jenny Jackson for putting her new pass in her floor routine! Freshman Courtney Tripp's floor exhibition was also awesome!
A huge thank you to Jenny's mother, Lisa, and Lauryn's mother, Michelle, for making both our teal (All for Big Syl) and Pink Out masks and t shirts! We loved them! If you haven't seen them yet, go check out our Facebook page. While you are there you can also watch the meet videos!
Our next competition will be Sunday, March 7th at 2 p.m. against TWU and OU in Denton. Fans are not allowed sadly, but you can cheer us on by watching on livestream (twuathletics.com) or Facebook Live. Hope to see you there!
