Gents Fall 4-2 To Celts In Season Finale On Saturday Night
The Centenary men's soccer team had its season come to an end on Saturday night as the Gents fell 4-2 to the University of St. Thomas Celts in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Sabercats Stadium.
Houston - The Centenary men's soccer team had its season come to an end on Saturday night as the Gents fell 4-2 to the University of St. Thomas Celts in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Sabercats Stadium.
The Gents finished their season at 7-9-2 overall and 5-6 in SCAC play while the Celts finish their season at 9-6-1 and 5-5-1 in SCAC play. Centenary needed a victory on Saturday to clinch a berth into next week's conference tournament. Centenary's seven wins are tied for third-most in a single season in the division III era (2011-present) in program history and the Gents' five conference wins are the most in a single season since joining the SCAC prior to the 2012 season.
The Celts, who also missed the conference tournament, finished 8-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in league play. St. Thomas now leads the all-time series with Centenary, 7-0-1. The Gents lost their last four matches of the season and finished 2-6-1 on the road this season.
St. Thomas finished with a 28-6 advantage in shots and 16-4 in shots on goal. The Gents took three corner kicks and the Celts took a pair. Jovany Garcia started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the seventh minute, an unassisted goal, for a 1-0 lead. Elijah Flores then converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute to make it 2-0. The Celts took that 2-0 lead into halftime and then just over a minute into the second half, Brian Garcia scored to make it 3-0 as he was assisted by Jose Hernandez.
Centenary responded in the next minute as junior F Carter Webb (Flower Mound, Texas) scored his team-leading sixth goal to make it 3-1. Senior MF Brandon Guevara (Henderson, Texas) then scored his third goal of the season in the 59th minute to make it 3-2. Brian Garcia added a goal in the 78th minute to make it 4-2 Celts.
Senior GK Sam Brocato (Leesville, La.) started and went he distance as he made a season and career-high 12 saves. Jorge Gonzalez started for the Celts and recorded two saves and allowed both goal in his 84:37 while Fransisco Jimenez played the final 5:23 and did not record a save.
The Gents finished the season as one of the conference's top offensive teams, as they entered the match second in goals (35) and points (91) and tied for fourth in assists (21). Centenary was also second in the conference in goals per game (2.06) and tied for 85th nationally in goals scored and tied for 104th in points.
The Gents' 37 goals are the most in a season in the D3 era, their 21 assists are the third-most, and 95 points rank second. Their 199 shots and 99 shots on goal also rank in the top 10.
