The Gents (0-3) and Pirates (1-1) have met the last two seasons as members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, but both schools joined the HCLC this past summer and are joined by former SCAC members Colorado College and the University of Dallas and have paired with North Division members Anderson University, Earlham College, Hanover College and Mount St. Joseph University. Centenary, Southwestern, Colorado College, and Dallas make up the South Division.
The top two teams from each division following the regular season will meet at a neutral location for the HCLC Championship. The winner of the HCLC Championship will earn the automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament as the HCLC representative. Centenary was picked sixth in the preseason poll while Southwestern was predicted to finish second.
The Gents fell 22-7 to the Hendrix College Warriors on Tuesday night in a non-conference contest at Mayo Field as they were playing their third home game in 11 days after opening the season on Feb. 5 versus Cornell, a 16-10 loss, and then dropped a 15-14 decision to Huntingdon on Feb. 13.
Hendrix led 7-1 after the first quarter and 11-2 at halftime. The Warriors outscored the Gents 4-2 in a low-scoring third quarter and then finished with a 7-3 advantage in the fourth quarter for an 11-5 margin in the second half.
Centenary junior A John Mark Waniewski (Bossier City, La.) scored the Gents' first goal of the game at the 9:02 mark of the first quarter off an assist from freshman A G'Colby Spivey (Dallas, Texas). Freshman A Braxton Parchman (Shreveport, La.) scored the Gents' second goal with the assist credited to fellow freshman MF Marc Mackey (Houston, Texas). Parchman and Mackey each have five goals this season and Parchman is the team leader in assists with five. Comi has scored four times and Waniewski twice.
The Gents started fast after halftime, scoring a pair of goals in the first five minutes as Spivey found the net for an unassisted goal, his fourth of the season, at the 13:16 mark and junior M/F Kyle Comi (Allen, Texas) followed three minutes later with an unassisted goal of his own. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Cook (Bryant, Ark.) scored all three Centenary goals in the fourth quarter, with all three unassisted. Cook now has five multi-goal performances in his young career and has a team-leading nine goals this season. Cook is also the team leader with 11 points as she has recorded a pair of assists.
Freshman GK Jason Turner (Bossier City, La.) made his first collegiate start in goal and played the first 16:27 and allowed eight goals but also made eight saves. Fellow freshman GK Alex Nicks-Davis (Nashville, Tenn.) replaced Turner and logged 39:46 of playing time as he allowed 12 goals and recorded 13 saves. Centenary used a third goalie for the final 3:47 as freshman Dylan Miller (Shreveport, La.) allowed a pair of late goals.
Centenary finished with 21 saves to the Warriors' eight, Hendrix recorded 42 ground balls in the game and Centenary had 28. The Warriors ended with a 59-27 edge in shots and each team was 9-11 on clears. Hendrix won 20 face offs while Centenary won 13.
