Ladies Start Strong In Season Opener At McMurry
The Centenary swimming teams opened their seasons on Friday against McMurry University in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference dual meet as the Ladies picked up a win by a score of 95-51 and the Gents fell 111-70 inside Phillips Family Center.
Abilene, Texas - The Centenary swimming teams opened their seasons on Friday against McMurry University in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference dual meet as the Ladies picked up a win by a score of 95-51 and the Gents fell 111-70 inside Phillips Family Center.
The Ladies claimed six individual wins and a victory in the 200 free relay and the Gents tallied five individual wins and earned a runner-up finish in the 200 free relay.
Junior Reece Esser (Huntsville, Texas) got off to a strong start as she claimed wins in the 50 free (25.86) and 100 fly (1:03.82) and teamed with sophomore Bailey Allemeier (Altus, Okla.), junior Cicely Jackson (Lafayette, La.), and sophomore Isabela Vasquez (Lafayette, La.) to win the 200 free relay (1:54.12).
Sophomore Hunter Hedges (Murphy, Texas) and sophomore Adam Stelly (Opelousas, La.) each matched Esser with a pair of wins and Hedges and Stelly teamed with sophomore Sake Stroderd (Sulphur, La.) and freshman Jack Williams (Lafayette, La.) to finish second in the 200 free relay (1:32.35).
Jackson won the 1000 free (12:36.39) and Allemeier was runner-up and right behind her in a time of 12:36.40. In the men's 1000 free, sophomore Parker Randolph (Shreveport, La.) finished fourth (11:29.81), sophomore Cade Campbell (Ruston, La.) fifth, and sophomore Jordan Jerrigan (Temple, Texas) was sixth (13:02.97).
Stelly claimed wins in the 200 free (1:52.74) and 100 fly (54.76) Hedges' wins came in the 100 breast (1:03.10) and 200 IM (2:04.39). Stroderd won the 50 free (22.83) and Williams finished as runner-up (23.13) while freshman Kelvin Ridgley Jr. (Zachary, La.) finished sixth (28.87).
Stroderd placed third in the 100 breast (1:06.89) and junior Ubaldo Ayala (Hallsville, Texas) finished sixth (1:12.30). Senior Daniel Lewis (Alexandria, La.) finished fourth in the 200 free (2:02.95) and Ridgley Jr. was sixth (2:30.90). Lewis also earned a third-place finish in the 100 back (1:02.40), Williams fourth (1:03.19), and freshman George Arrona (Harlingen, Texas) was sixth – 1:17.49. Ayala and Randolph for fourth place in the 200 IM as each swam a time of 2:20.00. Campbell (1:03.47) and Jerrigan (1:05.26) finished fifth and sixth in the 100 fly.
Freshman Anna Hicks (Lafayette, La.) won the 200 IM in her collegiate debut (2:37.79) and finished as runner-up in both the 100 breast (1:21.42) and 200 free (2:16.39). Allemeier won the 100 back (1:13.51) and Vasquez won the 100 breast (1:17.39) and was fourth in the 200 free (2:33.30). Jackson finished third in the 100 fly (1:10.95) and senior Adriana de la Fuente (Baton Rouge, La.) finished third in the 50 free (33.27), fourth in the 100 back (1:26.94) and fifth in the 200 free (2:44.86). Junior Kennadi St. Clair (Duncanville, Texas) was runner-up in the 50 free (30.26) and third in the 100 breast (1:28.97).
The teams will square off again on Saturday at 10 a.m.
