Offensive Guru Hal Mumme Joins Football Staff As Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach
Hal Mumme, one of the most innovative and dynamic offensive minds in the history of college football, has joined the Centenary football staff as the offensive coordinator, Director of Athletics and Recreation David Orr announced.

Mumme, widely recognized as one of the originators of the "Air Raid" offense, brings his expertise to head coach Byron Dawson's staff for the 2025 season. Mumme, a native of San Antonio, has coached at various levels, from high school to the NCAA, and is known for his innovative offensive strategies. Mumme played collegiately at New Mexico Military Institute and Tarleton State University.

Mumme's coaching career began in 1989 at Iowa Wesleyan where he stayed for three seasons and compiled a 24-11 record and made the NAIA playoffs in his final season (1991). He then had a highly successful five seasons at division III Valdosta State University in which he was 40-17-1 and 24-10-1 in conference play and made the NCAA Division II playoffs twice.
Mumme then landed a high-profile job at Kentucky in 1997 where he won 20 games over four seasons, led the Wildcats to a pair of bowl game appearances, and coached prolific quarterback Tim Couch. He returned to the sidelines with NCAA Division 1AA Southeastern Louisiana in 2003 and went 12-11 in two seasons with the Lions.
He then coached at New Mexico State (2005-08), McMurry University (2009-12), and Belhaven University (2014-17). Mumme served as offensive coordinator for part of the 2018 season, coached the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football, and was offensive coordinator of the Dallas Renegades in the XFL.
In April 2021, Mumme was announced as the head coach of the Linemen, competing in The Spring League North Division in Indianapolis. The Linemen defeated the Jousters in the Mega Bowl 26–23.
The Gents will open their season on Sept. 6 against Westgate Christian University at Atkins Field and are scheduled to play nine regular-season games – five at home and four on the road. Centenary will play Millsaps College on Sept. 13 in Jackson, Miss. and return home to face East Texas Baptist University on Sept. 20. The Gents will have a bye week on Sept. 27 and then face Austin College on Oct. 4 in Sherman, Texas.
Centenary's first league game is Oct. 11 versus Texas Lutheran University, on Oct. 18 the Gents are at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., and they close the month of October at home versus McMurry University for a conference contest on Oct. 25. Centenary will face Hendrix College on Nov. 1 in Conway, Ark. and are back home on Nov. 8 to face the 'Roos of Austin College again to close the regular season.
The SCAC will feature a new and exciting format for determining its league champion next season as all six schools (Austin College, Centenary, Hendrix, Lyon, McMurry, and TLU) will meet on Nov. 15 in Little Rock, Ark. for championship weekend held at War Memorial Stadium with an exciting day featuring three games - the No. 5 versus the No. 6 seed, the No. 3 seed versus the No. 4 seed, and the top two seeds playing each other.
