During his time as the play caller for the Rams, Grayson's offense averaged a combined 40.8 points per game. Under his direction, the program captured the 2024 Georgia 6A State Championship, secured 3 Region 4 titles, reached the state semifinals, and developed an Elite 11 quarterback along with three all-county first-team QBs.

In 2020, Barefield was an analyst at the University of Louisiana under Billy Napier (FBS – Sun Belt Champions, 2020). For the 2019 season Barefield was the Offensive Coordinator at Quincy University (DII), where he engineered triple-digit national ranking improvements in points per game, passing yards, and total offense (2019). In one season at Quincy, Barefield's offense broke 12 offensive records for the Hawks.
Barefield coached receivers in 2018 at the University of Central Arkansas (FCS) after serving as the Pass Game coordinator in 2017 at his alma mater Northwestern Oklahoma State University (DII). From 2013-2016 is when Barefield got his start as play caller. He joined his father and head coach, Keith Barefield Sr. to help launch a program from scratch serving as the Offensive Coordinator at Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL (NAIA). After a year of no competition, SEU's offense posted three straight seasons of averaging 44+ points per game, won two conference championships, and had the conference MVP for three consecutive years (2013–2016).

A graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University with a degree in English (2012), Barefield was a four-year starter for the Rangers where received first team all- conference honors three times.
