Gents Fall In SCAC Opener At Home to Bulldogs
The Centenary football team fell 55-27 to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs on Saturday night in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Atkins Field.

The Gents (0-4, 0-1 SCAC) were at home for the first time since a loss to East Texas Baptist University last month and are now 0-2 on their home field this season. The Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0 SCAC) improved to 2-0 on the road.
The Bulldogs dominated statistically, running a whopping 87 plays for 513 yards of total offense and gaining 30 first downs. TLU rushed 66 times for 329 yards and passed for 184 while finishing with a 37:08-22:52 edge in time of possession.
The Gents finished with 398 yards of total offense on 59 plays and had 16 first downs. Centenary rushed for 159 yards on 25 carries and passed for 239 yards. TLU converted 6 of 15 third downs (40 %) and went a perfect 4-4 on fourth down while Centenary was 5 of 14 (36 %) on third down but did convert two of three fourth-down opportunities.
The Bulldogs' A'Jean Augustine kicked a 26-yard field goal with 5:53 left in the first quarter to give the visitors a 3-0 lead which they held until a West Guzman 3-yard TD run extended their lead to 10-0 at the 13:20 mark of the second period following a 12-play, 80-yard drive. Tory Brooks' 1-yard TD run then made it 17-0 at the 6:44 mark.
Junior QB/LB Vance Feuerbacher (Plano, Texas) connected with freshman WR Theo Dunn (Gonzales, La.) for a 26-yard TD with just 42 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the gents' deficit to 17-6. The Gents went for two but Feuerbacher's pass failed. The Bulldogs then quickly moved 42 yards on just five plays in 35 seconds and Augustine nailed a 35-yard FG at the buzzer to end the half and make it 20-6.
Centenary started the second half in impressive fashion as Feuerbacher again found Dunn for a TD, this time on a third and 17 following a 5-play drive that covered 65 yards in 1:48. Freshman K/P Zane Wyss (Shreveport, La.) added the PAT to make it 20-13.
The Gents' defense then forced a punt but senior WR Trent Smith (Shreveport, La.) fumbled and the Bulldogs' Xavier Simpson recovered at the 31 yard line. Five plays later, Guzman scored from two yards out to extend the TLU lead to 27-13. On the Gents' next possession, Feuerbacher was sacked by Jared Ro9gers on third down and Travonne Woodley recovered at the Gents' seven-yard line. Guzman scored on the first play and Augustine added the PAT for a 34-13 lead.
The Gents, though, would not go away as senior RB Obadiah Butler (Crowley, La.) thrilled the home crowd with a spectacular 95-yard TD run and Wyss' PAT made it 34-20. Centenary's defense forced a TLU punt and a 12-play, 67-yard drive followed that lasted 4:20 and ended in a Feuerbacher 21-yard TD pass to sophomore RB/WR Christopher Jackson (Shreveport, La.). Wyss again was true on the PAT and the Gents were down just 34-27 with 2:37 left in the third to the delight of the home crowd.
The Bulldogs answered with a Reece Deitrick 28-yard TD pass to Caleb Camarillo at the 14:33 mark of the fourth quarter and an Augustine PAT to make it 41-27. TLU then added two more TD – a 4-yard TD run by Guzman and a Brooks 18-yard run that made it 55-27 with 7:24 left in the game.
Deitrick finished 13-20 for 184 yards and one TD, Guzman carried the ball 29 times for 125 yards and four TD. And Brooks rushed nine times for 59 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Deitrick had eight carries for 37 yards with a long run of 23 yards. Camarillo caught three passes for 69 yards and a TD and Augustine was busy as he went 7-7 on PAT and 2-2 on FG attempts.
Feuerbacher finished 23-34 for 239 yards and two TD with an interception, ran the ball eight times with a long rush of 28 yards and also punted four times for 140 yards (35.0 average) with a long of 38 yards.
Butler rushed 15 times for a game-high 159 yards and also caught five passes and returned six kicks for 113 yards (18.8/return) with a long return of 52 yards. Dunn led all receivers in catches (nine) and yards (127) and scored two TD. Jackson caught four balls for 79 yards and his one TD.
Freshman S Marc Canzoneri had a team-high nine total tackles, including five solo stops to lead a defense that made five tackles for loss, had one sack, and two pass breakups. Junior DB Caden Lynch (Tyler, Texas) matched Canzoneri with nine tackles and sophomore LB Collin Watkins (West Monroe, La.) and freshman DB TJ Ranson (New Orleans, La.) each had eight.
Junior DL D'Qavion Lemons (Shreveport, La.) added seven, senior DL Rema Getter (Shreveport, La.) had six tackles and 1.5 TFL, and junior DE Jacques Franklin (Richmond, Texas) finished with five tackles and added one sack and one TFL.
Junior LB Devon Strickland (Shreveport, La.) added five tackles and a TFL, sophomore DB Dwayne Mills Jr. (Slidell, La.) had six tackles, freshman LB Jackson Curry (DeSoto, Texas) had four tackles and a TFL and freshman DT Jayden Carmouche (Lafayette, La.) and senior DL Demetrus Gladney Jr. (Haughton La.) each added five tackles.
The Gents will return to action next Saturday at Lyon College (1-3, 0-1 SCAC) with kickoff set for 3:30 PM in Batesville, Ark.
