Shreveport - Senior Olivia Stratmann (Houston, Texas) is this week's recipient of the Coaches' Choice Award, the Midwest Independent Conference announced on Wednesday.
Stratmann earned one of the four individual honors that the conference chooses on a weekly basis and received it for the first time in her career.
She tied for second place on bars with a season-high 9.575 last Friday night, appropriately on her Senior Night as the Ladies posted a 188.325 team score and finished second in a non-conference tri-meet versus Fisk University and Wilberforce University inside the Gold Dome.
Here is what Centenary head coach Meg Crowley had to say about Olivia:
"Olivia's journey back to the competition floor has been anything but easy. During her time at Centenary, she has endured two major surgeries—a Lisfranc fracture in her foot and a torn ACL, and fought her way back from both. Because of these setbacks, her competition experience has been somewhat limited despite being a senior, and the early part of this season reflected that as she worked to find consistency on bars."
"But Olivia never stopped pushing. Week by week, she continued to show up, do the work, and believe that her moment was coming. And on Friday night, during Senior Night, it did. Olivia delivered the best bar routine I have ever seen her perform in competition. Her routine features a beautiful Higgins to a piked Jaeger—an element of uniqueness and difficulty that you don't often see in college gymnastics—and she executed it with confidence and poise."
"While we all sometimes have our frustrations with judging, this routine truly deserved more recognition than it received. That's why I nominated Olivia for the Coaches' Choice Award—so she can receive the acknowledgement she deserves for not only a stunning bar routine, but for the resilience and perseverance it took to get there. Olivia's grit, determination, and willingness to keep fighting through uncertainty have been an incredible example for our entire team."
The Ladies return to action this weekend for a pair of meets on the road as they will face Greenville University (March 13) and Bowling Green State University (March 15).
