Diamond Gents Split DH With Tornados On Saturday
The Centenary baseball team split a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against the Concordia University Tornados, winning game one 7-3 and falling 8-5 in game two at Shehee Stadium.

The Diamond Gents (7-8, 2-4 SCAC) won the series by virtue of a 6-3 comeback victory in the series opener on Friday night. The Tornados are 7-3 and 6-3 in league play.
Game One Recap: Centenary 7 Concordia 3
Freshman UTL Garritt Romero (Manvel, Texas) started on the mound for the Diamond Gents in game one and went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) with no walks and three strikeouts. He faced 23 batters, hit one, and threw 66 pitches with 46 for strikes.
Sophomore RHP Coen Laroux (Woodworth, La.) relieved him and picked up the win, his first of the season. Laroux (1-0) blanked the Tornados on three hits with one BB and eight K's. He faced 17 batters and threw 66 pitches – 44 strikes. Sophomore P/IF Treyson Martin (Huffman, Texas) got the final out of the game to seal the win.
Gavin Voth (0-2) started for the Tornados and was tagged with the loss as he allowed six runs, all earned, and nine hits in three innings with no BB and one K. He allowed a pair of home runs and faced 18 batters, throwing 68 pitches with 40 for strikes. Four relievers covered the remaining eight innings and combined they allowed only one unearned run on one hit but issued eight BB and struck out one.
The Diamond Gents finished with 10 hits, drew eight BB, struck out only twice, left six on base, and made three errors. The Tornados had nine hits, drew just one BB, struck out 11 times, stranded 11 runners, and made one error.
The Tornados took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by 1B Kalen Clark but that advantage did not last long as the Diamond Gents answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Junior DH Bryce Bienvenu (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had an RBI single to tie the game and then senior C Caleb Ickes (Prairieville, La.) put Centenary ahead with an RBI groundout.
Sophomore CF Blaine Birkelbach (Pearland, Texas) had an infield single to score freshman LF Parker Seago (Orange, Texas) to make it 3-1. Centenary then scored three more times in the third as sophomore RF Noah Paulson (El Lago, Texas) had a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 and freshman 1B Ethan Hopkins (Baton Rouge, La.) and sophomore 3B Aron Gillum (Shreveport, La.) hit back-to-back homers to make it 6-1. The Tornados scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and the Diamond Gents scored their final run on an error by Concordia reliever Dayton Cliffe in the bottom of the eighth to make it 7-3.
Gillum finished 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Bienvenu went 2-2 with an RBI and a run, senior 2B Clay Menard (Berwick, La.) was 2-2 with two BB and a run scored, Birkelbach finished 1-2 with three BB and an RBI, Hopkins 1-3 with an RBI, a BB, and a run scored, Villanueva was 1-1 with a BB, Seago 1-2 with a run scored, and Ickes was 0-3 with the RBI groundout. Menard and Bienvenu each had a stolen base and Gillum, Menard, and Seago each had a double.
Kalen Clark and Landon Hyle led the Concordia offense as they went a combined 4-8 with two RBI, a run scored, and a BB as Hyle hit a solo home run in the fourth.
Game Two Recap: Concordia 8 Centenary 5
The Tornados scored twice in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead and added two more in the third to open a 4-0 advantage. The Diamond Gents cut their deficit in half by scoring two in the fifth but Concordia added two more in the top of the sixth to stretch its lead to 6-2 and added two more in the eighth to make it 8-2.
Centenary staged a rally in the bottom of the ninth by scoring three runs and had the tying run at the plate with two outs but Parker Seago flew out to end the game.
The Diamond Gents finished with 12 hits, drew four BB, struck out three times, stole one base, left 12 on base, and committed two errors. The Tornados finished with nine hits, had five BB, seven strikeouts, left seven on base, and also made two errors.
Menard led the Maroon and White with a game-high four hits and Paulson had three. Birkelbach and Hopkins each had two and Ickes had one. Landon Hyle, Carson Riley, and Logan Smith each had two hits to lead the Concordia attack. Hyle hit a two-run homer in the third to give him a pair of dingers on the day.
Sophomore UT Tyler Hughes (Coushatta, La.) started for the Diamond Gents and suffered the loss as he lasted just 2.1 innings and allowed four runs, all earned, and two hits with two BB and a pair of K's. He faced 13 batters and threw 48 pitches (29 strikes) with two HBP and a wild pitch.
Sophomore LHP Roman Ardoin (Lumberton, Texas) came in for Hughes and worked 4.2 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with one BB and four K's. He faced 22 batters and threw 66 pitches – 45 for strikes along with one HBP and one wild pitch. Sophomore UTL Turner Mclelland (Minden, La.) and freshman RHP Dallas McFadden (Garrison, Texas) combined to pitch the final two innings and allowed no runs on one hit with no BB and one K.
Jaxson Frazier started for the Tornados and received a no-decision after he went 4.1 innings as Jackson Low (2-0) came in for him and went four innings and allowed three runs, all earned, and seven hits with two BB and two K's.
Frazier allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits with one BB and one K. He faced 19 batters, hitting a pair, and threw 63 pitches – 35 for strikes. Low faced 21 batters, hit one, and threw 69 pitches (41 strikes). Gabe Guitterez relived Low in the bottom of the ninth after Paulson had an RBI double to make it 8-3 and was greeted by a two-run single by Hopkins that brought the Diamond Gents within three at 8-5.
Gillum then walked and Hopkins advanced to second with one out. Guitterez got Romero to ground into a fielder's choice and Hopkins was forced at third base for the second out and he got Seago to fly out to end the inning and the game.
Centenary is on the road next weekend in SCAC play to face the Hendrix College Warriors in Conway, Ark.
