Centenary and Berry met last season, the first game between the two programs, as the Vikings defeated the Gents 81-70 in Shreveport.
First-year head coach J.A. Anglin will lead the Gents this season and will be assisted by Associate Head Coach Dominic Percia and assistant coach Jeff Wiese. Former Gent Jalen Ned, who finished his career last season, has joined the staff as a Student Assistant Coach.
The Gents' first home game is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 14 against East Texas Baptist University (7 PM) and their first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest is Tuesday, Dec. 2 at LeTourneau University (5:30 PM).
Centenary's first league game at home is set for Friday, Jan. 2 against LeTourneau at 5:30 PM. The Gents are 48-21 at the Gold Dome over the last six seasons with a pair of double-digit win seasons.
Centenary's final home game will be on Saturday, Feb. 14 against the University of the Ozarks at 4 PM and the Gents will finish the regular season on the road at Colorado College (Feb. 20 – 6:30 PM) and the University of St. Thomas (Feb. 22 – NOON).
The Gents' non-conference games in addition to the games this weekend and the home opener against ETBU are: Arlington Baptist University (Nov. 18), University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Nov. 25), at ETBU (Dec. 9), at Howard Payne University (Dec. 12), versus UMHB (Dec. 19), and Howard Payne at home on Jan. 20.
The Gents were picked to finish ninth in the SCAC Preseason Poll this season. The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the SCAC Men's Basketball Tournament, which will be held February 27 through March 1 and hosted by Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. The winner of that event will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
SEASON OUTLOOK:
The Gents return three All-conference players from last season's club in senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas), senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.), and sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas). Beverly was named to the Third Team while Collier and Addison earned Honorable-Mention recognition.
Also back are sophomore G Sirwilliam McDuffie (Houston, Texas), sophomore G Trenton Thomas (Cedar Hill, Texas), and junior F Khristian Wilkerson (Killeen, Texas). A dozen new faces join the roster – six true freshmen and six transfers who are either a sophomore or a junior.
Beverly was named an All-conference player for the third-straight season and was named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's All-Louisiana Team, earning a spot on the Third Team. He was one of just five non-division 1 players to make the prestigious team as selected by a statewide vote of school sports information directors. Beverly missed the first six games of the season due to injury but flourished in the 18 games he played in as he averaged 18.6 PPG and reached double figures a whopping 16 times while scoring 20+ points eight times and 30 or more twice.
He finished the season by scoring in double figures nine times in a row with four 20+ point games and one 30+ point performance. He scored a career-high 32 points twice – on Jan. 7 against LeTourneau and again on Feb. 9 against McMurry and he shot 77.8 % (56-72) from the FT line and 32.6 % (56-172) from beyond the arc for the season.
Collier was one of the top overall players in the conference last season as he averaged 14.0 PPG as he finished in the top 15 in the conference in scoring. He posted 15 double-figure scoring performances while scoring 20+ eight times, shot 84.4 % from the free-throw line and 34.9 % from 3-point range. He ranked in the top 100 nationally at the FT line and ranked in the top 15 in the conference in FT %, steals per game, 3-point FG made, and minutes played (30.8/game). He reached double figures an impressive 13 times in his first 18 games of the season which featured seven games of 20+ points which included a career-high 31 points at Ozarks on Jan. 4 in a thrilling 69-68 victory.
He played all 40 minutes in a game three times and 30+ minutes 15 times, reached double figures in conference play eight times and was perfect from the FT line nine times. Collier also did not miss a FT in six-consecutive games from Dec. 6-Jan. 12, going a staggering 23-23.
Addison was one of the top freshmen in the conference as he averaged 7.5 PPG and 5.7 rebounds/game in 25 games played and 10 starts. He shot 44.5 % (69-155) from the floor and 70 % (49-70) from the FT line. He finished sixth in the SCAC in both blocked shots per game (0.9) and steals per game (1.6), and 13th in the conference in rebounding. He reached double figures nine times and scored a season-high 18 in the season finale at Dallas and scored in double figures in his final three games of the season and in five of his final 12.
Centenary looks to continue its recent success as the Gents have recorded winning seasons in seven of its last eight seasons highlighted by a pair of conference titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. The Gents have made three trips to the SCAC championship game along with five semifinal appearances in the last decade, as they have established themselves as one of the SCAC's top programs.
Anglin also aims to continue the home court success that the Gents have enjoyed in recent seasons as the Maroon and White are 63-29 in the Gold Dome over the last eight seasons and 80-39 in the last decade.
"We have put together a very challenging non-conference schedule, but we feel it will give us great preparation for SCAC play," said Anglin.
"The team is gelling on and off the floor. We have a good returning core coupled with an exciting recruiting class. If we continue to work hard, we will give ourselves a chance to be very competitive in the league."
