Gents Edged 78-77 By Pfeiffer On Saturday
The Centenary men's basketball team was edged 78-77 by Pfeiffer University on Saturday afternoon in a a non-conference contest as part of the Viking Tip-Off Classic inside the Cage Center.
Rome, Ga. - The Centenary men's basketball team was edged 78-77 by Pfeiffer University on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest as part of the Viking Tip-Off Classic inside the Cage Center.
The Gents fell to 0-2 after their 77-55 loss to the Berry College Vikings on Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Pfeiffer improved to 1-1 after falling in its season opener to Maryville 84-72 on Friday.
The Falcons led 35-31 at halftime and the Gents outscored them 46-43 in the second half. The Gents shot the ball well, finishing 40.5 % (30-74) from the floor and 71.4 % (10-14) from the free throw line but only made 7 of 27 attempts from beyond the arc for 25.9 %. The Falcons also shot the ball well, making 29-69 from the floor for 42 % and 17-21 for 81 % but also struggled from beyond the arc (3-16 for 1.8 %).
Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) led all scorers with 24 points, sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) scored 19, and senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) had 12. Freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) each scored eight, freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) added five, and freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) had one point.
The Falcons finished with a 50-38 advantage in points in the paint, 17-11 in second-chance points, and 10-0 in fast break points. The Gents wound up with a slight advantage in bench points (20-17) and scored 16 points off of Pfeiffer's 12 turnovers while the Falcons finished with eight points in the category as Centenary only committed 10 miscues. The game featured 10 ties and 22 lead changes.
Doug Smith scored 22 to lead the Falcons, Sean Sucarichi scored 18, and DeJuan Sidney added 12. Zach Sloan scored six, Justin Gaten and Clayton Robinson each had five, Drake Stewart and Brandon Alfonse each had four, and Simeon Tokoto had two. Sidney recorded a double-double as he grabbed 10 rebounds and Coleman matched his rebounding total to lead the Gents. Addison was next with eight boards for Centenary, Broussard and Evans each had five, and Beverly had four.
Addison added four assists, three steals, and a blocked shot to go with his 19 points and eight boards for an impressive all-around performance. Braden had two assists and two steals and finished 2-2 at the FT line. Beverly was 6-9 at the FT line, hit four treys, and added a pair of steals.
The Falcons jumped out to an 18-9 lead at the 10:26 mark of the first half, but the Gents roared back with a 17-6 run to take a 26-24 lead on a Collier trey with 3:13 left before halftime. Five more lead changes followed in the next three minutes and then a tip-in before the buzzer by the Falcons gave them their four-point lead at the break.
Multiple lead changes occurred in the opening minutes of the second half and then a layup by Sloan at the 14:27 mark gave the Falcons a 50-43 lead. But the Gents answered right back with a 10-0 run to take a 53-50 lead with 11:34 remaining. The Falcons and Gents traded baskets and leads over the next several minutes until a Sucarichi layup at the 7:01 mark made it 68-62 Pfeiffer which capped an 18-9 run.
The Falcons held leads of 72-64 with 4:58 remaining in the game, 76-69 at the 3:56 mark, and 77-72 with only 2:48 remaining. Addison's layup got the Gents within three points at 77-74, Smith made one of two at the FT line, and then Beverly sank three at the line with 57 seconds remaining after being fouled by Sucarichi to make the score 78-77.
Robinson then missed a 3-pointer and Addison grabbed the rebound and then Centenary called a timeout. Addison then missed with just seconds remaining and Beverly rebounded but his 3-pointer at the buzzer missed as the Falcons escaped with the one-point win.
Centenary will open its home schedule next Friday against East Texas Baptist University at 7 PM in the Gold Dome.
