The Gents (1-9, 0-2 SCAC) lost at home to the LeTourneau University YellowJackets by a score of 80-75 on Friday while the War Hawks (5-6, 0-2 SCAC) lost a non-conference game to Hardin-Simmons University at home on Tuesday, 91-82.
Centenary is 1-4 on the road this season while McMurry is 2-2 at home. McMurry edged Centenary 69-66 last season in Shreveport in the lone meeting between the teams as the War Hawks joined the conference prior to last season. McMurry leads the all-time series, 4-2. McMurry's two league losses are both to Schreiner University – 90-85 in November on the road and 93-84 last month at home. Centenary's first conference loss was also against LeTourneau, 63-62, last month in Longview, Texas.
Gents' Season Individual Statistical Leaders:
Scoring: Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) – 16.0 PPG
Rebounding: Sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) – 7.0 RPG
Assists: Freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) – 2.6/game
Blocks: Freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) – 1.0/game
Steals: Addison – 1.6/game
The Gents average 69.0 PPG, shoot 41.1 % from the floor, 29.6 % from 3-point range, and 70.4 % from the free-throw line while averaging 32.9 rebounds/game, 10.0 assists/game, 7.5 steals/game, and 2.0 blocks/game.
Centenary's defense has been solid and tested against a difficult schedule through nine games, as the Gents rank fifth in the conference in scoring defense (78.2 PPG) and are third in 3-point FG % defense (30.3). Five of the Gents' 10 losses have been by six points or less with a pair of one-point losses.
Beverly is tied for ninth in the league in scoring, senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) is 21st (13.1 PPG) and Braden is 25th (11.1 PPG). Addison is eighth in the conference in rebounding and freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) is 13th (5.8/game). Addison, who averages 9.6 PPG, also leads the Gents in FG % (53.8) to rank eighth in the conference and is 14th in the conference in steals per game (1.6) and is tied for 11th in blocked shots per game at 0.7/game.
Evans is tied for fourth in the league in blocked shots, Beverly is sixth in the SCAC in 3-point FG made (2.4/game), and Beverly is the league leader in minutes played (33.9/game) while Braden checks in at ninth (31.5/game). Collier is the Gents' top FT shooter and is tied for eighth in the league (80.0 %). Broussard is averaging 7.7 PPG, Evans 6.1 PPG and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) averages 3.9 PPG.
The Gents were picked to finish ninth in the SCAC Preseason Poll this season while the War Hawks were predicted to finish fifth and received one first-place vote. The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the SCAC Men's Basketball Tournament, which will be held February 27 through March 1 and hosted by Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. The winner of that event will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Centenary wraps up the weekend on Sunday against the Schreiner Mountaineers in Kerrville, Texas at NOON.
