Gents Defeat 'Roos On Friday 68-63
The Centenary men's basketball team picked up a key road win on Friday evening as the Gents defeated the Austin College 'Roos 68-63 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside Hughey Gymnasium.
Sherman, Texas - The Centenary men's basketball team picked up a key road win on Friday evening as the Gents defeated the Austin College 'Roos 68-63 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside Hughey Gymnasium.
The Gents (3-10, 2-3 SCAC) improved to 3-5 on the road while the 'Roos (3-11, 0-5 SCAC) lost their third game in a row and are 2-5 at home this season. The Gents trailed the 'Roos 32-30 at halftime but outscored them 38-31 in the second half to completed the comeback victory. The game featured eight lead changes and two ties with Centenary's largest lead of the game being 14 and Austin College's four.
Centenary shot just 36.8 % (21-57) from the floor and 33.3 % (8-24) from beyond the arc while finishing 72.0 % (18-25) from the free-throw line. Austin College shot the ball well overall, finishing 27-56 from the floor (41.5 %) and made 6-20 attempts from beyond the arc for 30.0 % and were 3-7 from the FT line for 42.9 %. The 'Roos outrebounded the Gents 44-36 and finished with 19 assists, five steals, and two blocked shots. Centenary recorded 10 assists, six steals, and blocked seven shots – tied for its season high also accomplished on Dec. 19 versus UMHB at home.
Austin College turned the ball over 15 times and Centenary turned it over eight times. The Gents finished with single-digit turnovers for the fifth time this season and third game in a row as they continue to take good care of the ball. The 'Roos finished with a 34-20 advantage in points in the paint, 19-8 in bench points, and 6-2 in fastbreak points while the Gents had advantages in points off of turnovers (13-6) and second-chance points (17-13).
Freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) led all scorers with 19 points and was joined in double figures by freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) who scored 17. Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) added nine, sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) finished with eight, and freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) scored seven. Junior F Me'Khai Taylor (New Orleans, La.) scored five and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) chipped in three.
Jamien June led the 'Roos with 18 points and Jordan Hudgins joined him in double figures with 11 off the bench. Kidus Getenet scored nine, Ryan Dupre eight, Tasshir Pina-Warren (seven) and Peyton Gonzales (six) combined for 13 and Gabe Markhart added four.
Braden reached double figures for the eighth time this season as he finished 5-12 from the floor and 9-12 from the FT line in 36 minutes with five assists, four rebounds, and a steal. Broussard was 5-11 from the floor, 5-10 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 at the FT line in 37 minutes with five boards, two steals, and an assist. He reached double figures for the fifth time this season and made a season-high five treys.
Beverly played all 40 minutes for the second time this season and scored nine points as he was 4-5 at the FT line with one trey and added an assist, a rebound, and a steal. Addison scored eight points in 33 minutes on 4-7 shooting with a team-high 10 rebounds, marking the fourth time this season he has recorded double-digit boards.
Evans had a solid game as he scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds and blocked a season-high six shots in his 29 minutes as he was 3-9 from the floor with one trey. Coleman scored three points in nine minutes with two rebounds and Taylor added five in 11 minutes with three rebounds and an assist.
The first half was very competitive and featured seven lead changes. After roughly nine minutes with the teams trading baskets, the Gents took a 17-11 lead with 10:45 on the clock to mark the first separation between the teams. But, a 15-8 run y the 'Roos allowed them to take a one-point lead (26-25) with 4:13 remaining in the half. Broussard then sank a pair of FT's with three seconds in the half to bring the Gents within a pair at halftime, 32-30.
Broussard nailed a trey just seconds into the second half to put the Gents up 33-32 and hit another one at the 18:29 mark to make it 36-32. A minute later Evan drained a 3-pointer and the red-hot Gents were up 39-32 and on a 9-0 run to start the half which prompted the 'Roos to call a :30 timeout. A layup by Braden extended the Gents' lead to 41-32 and then Austin College finally scored its first points of the period as Dupre made a layup at the 15:12 mark to make it 41-34.
Centenary took a 51-41 lead with 11:53 remaining and then a basket by Addison and two FT's by Taylor extended the Gents' lead to 55-41, their largest of the game, at the 10:20 mark. Centenary maintained a comfortable lead for the majority of the half, but a June trey with :47 left in the game pulled Austin College to 63-58. But, the Gents iced the game at the FT line, going 5-6 as Braden made all four of his attempts and Beverly was 1-2.
The Gents will wrap up the weekend at the University of Dallas on Saturday (4 PM) in Irving, Texas.
