CONWAY, Ark. – Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas), freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.), and freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) were all named to the 2026 All-SCAC Team, it was announced on Saturday.
In exclusive voting by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), senior guard Joey Ramirez of Concordia University (Texas) was selected SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Year while the University of St. Thomas staff, led by head coach Anthony Medina, earned SCAC Coaching Staff-of-the-Year honors for the second consecutive year. Complete Release
Senior guard Angel Johnson of St. Thomas was awarded the league's Defensive Player-of-the-Year award, and first year guard Tasshir Pina-Warren of Austin College was tabbed the league's First-Year Player-of-the-Year.
Beverly earned a spot on the Second Team and Braden and Broussard each garnered Honorable-Mention recognition. The two rookies Braden and Broussard also earned two of the five coveted spots on the prestigious All-Freshman Team. Beverly earned All-SCAC honors for the fourth time as he previously landed on the Third Team once and earned Honorable-Mention honors twice.
Ramirez, a native of Weimer, Texas, currently leads the league and is 18th in the nation in scoring (23.4 points per game) heading into this weekend's conference tournament. He also leads the Tornados in rebounding (6.2 rebounds per game), which is good for 12th in the conference. His current scoring average would be the fifth highest for a single season in SCAC history and with 585 total points, he is on pace to become just the fourth player in league history to score 600 or more points in a season and the first since Andrew Romero III of Johnson & Wales (Denver) in 2018-19. Ramirez had a season high of 44 points against Hardin Simmons on December 1st (tied for seventh-highest single game output in league history), and he has eclipsed the 30-point mark five times this season. A three-time SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week selection during the regular season, the senior has scored in double figures in 44 consecutive games, a streak that dates to December 30, 2024.
Ramirez was the runaway choice of the coaches and sports information directors, receiving 18 first-place votes to become the program's first-ever SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Year. Senior guard Angel Johnson of University of St. Thomas picked up four votes, and senior guard Jackson Mayes of LeTourneau University and junior guard Thomas Fleming of University of Dallas received the remaining two first-place votes.
Johnson, a senior guard from Houston, Texas, leads the conference in steals with 71, a season after he set the league's single-season record with 88 thefts during the 2024-25 campaign. If he holds on to the league lead, he will become the first player since former Celt and three-time SCAC DPOTY Cameron Gims (and just the sixth all-time) to lead the conference in steals in back-to-back seasons. A ballhawk in the backcourt, Johnson's defensive presence has helped St. Thomas to the ninth-best scoring defense in the nation as the Celts allow just 62.1 points per game. UST also leads the conference in field goal percentage defense (40.5 percent) and assists to turnover ratio (1.37), as Johnson, an equally talented playmaker, currently leads the SCAC in assists with 123. Johnson's award marks the fourth time a St. Thomas player has taken Defensive POTY honors, following the three-year run by the aforementioned Gims, who earned the honor in 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22.
In the Defensive POTY vote, Johnson received 16 first-place nods to cruise to this year's honor. Senior guard Teigan Edwards of LeTourneau was the only other player to receive multiple votes and was tabbed on five ballots. First-year forward Charles Hatchett of Hendrix College, sophomore guard Darone Cleakes of Concordia (Texas) and senior forward Russell MacFarlane of Colorado College were each listed on one ballot.
Pina-Warren, a first-year guard from North Richland Hills, Texas, is currently third among all first-year players and 21st overall in the conference in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game heading into this weekend's conference tournament. The freshman played a key role in catapulting the 'Roos to their first SCAC postseason appearance since 2021, posting the third-most points on the team (324) while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor (second on the team). Other than total points and field goal percentage, he is also currently in the top 20 in the league in minutes played (726 - 15th), field goals made (122 – 17th), three-point field goals made (42 – 14th) and three-point field goal percentage (38.2 percent – 14th). The freshman also contributes on the defensive side of the ball, often matching up against the opponent's best perimeter player. Pina-Warren is the first Austin College player in program history to earn the league's First-Year Player of the Year award.
An honorable mention all-SCAC selection and a member of the All-Freshman team, Pina-Warren earned nine votes from the coaches and sports information directors in the balloting for First-Year Player-of-the-Year. Centenary College first-year guard Jaden Braden and University of the Ozarks' first-year guard Eyal Shamri each picked up five first-place votes while Concordia's first-year guard Tremayne Martin received four first-place nods. First-year forward Kris Burgan of Dallas picked up the remaining first-place vote.
In his 11th season at St. Thomas, head coach Anthony Medina has compiled a 212-85 record (.714), which includes this year's squad that went 16-0 in league play, is currently 24-1 overall and ranked fifth in the nation by D3hoops.com and has earned the top seed from the Gold Division for the SCAC Basketball Tournament. The Celts are just the third men's team in league history to complete the regular season undefeated in conference play and the first since Medina led his 2022-23 squad to the same 16-0 mark. A UST grad and just the second head coach in program history, Medina has quickly established his program as a conference force as St. Thomas has won the regular season/division title five of the last six years (excluding the 2020-21 COVID season) and is seeking its fourth tournament title over that same stretch. In his seven years in the SCAC, Medina has posted a league mark of 96-12, giving him, among those with five plus years of coaching experience in the conference, the highest SCAC winning percentage (.889) of any men's coach in league history.
St. Thomas' and Medina's selection as part of the Coaching Staff-of-the-Year recognition represents the fourth time he has been honored by his coaching peers, having previously won the award in 2024-25, 2022-23 and in 2020-21, when he shared COTY honors with Jimmy Smith of Trinity. He is the first to earn back-to-back COTY honors since former Schreiner University head coach Connor Kuykendall was honored in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
