Gents Lose To Tigers On Friday Night
The Centenary men's basketball team fell 81-62 to the Colorado College Tigers on Friday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside Reid Arena.
Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Centenary men's basketball team fell 81-62 to the Colorado College Tigers on Friday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside Reid Arena.
The Gents (10-14, 8-7 SCAC) will wrap up the weekend and the regular season on Sunday versus the nationally-ranked University of St. Thomas Celts at NOON in Houston. The Tigers improved to 11-13 and 9-6 in league play with the win and are now 7-3 at home this season while the Gents are 5-7 on the road.
Centenary, 8-4 in its last 12 games, has clinched a berth into next weekend's SCAC Tournament in Conway, Ark. The Gents have secured the No. 2 seed in the Blue Division and will face the Gold No. 3 at NOON on Friday, Feb. 27. The top six teams in the conference (top three in each division) will qualify for the event, which will be held Feb. 27 through March 1 with Hendrix College as the host. The winner of that event will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Colorado College has now moved a game ahead of Schreiner University for the No. 3 spot in the Gold Division after the Mountaineers lost at home to Texas Lutheran University 86-81 at home on Friday. Colorado College and Schreiner split the season series. The Tigers will finish the regular season on Sunday at home against LeTourneau University while the Mountaineers face Concordia University. Centenary will face either Colorado College or Schreiner next Friday in the opening game of the SCAC Tournament.
LeTourneau (12-3), Centenary (8-7), St. Thomas (15-0), and Concordia (13-2) have all clinched tournament berths. Either Austin College (6-9) or the University of Dallas (5-10) will secure a berth as the No. 3 seed from the Blue Division along with either Colorado College or Schreiner as the Gold No. 3. Dallas swept Austin College this season and holds the tiebreaker. Austin College won at Hendrix College 89-63 on Friday and finishes its regular season on Saturday at the University of the Ozarks while Dallas is at Hendrix on Saturday after falling 72-65 at Ozarks on Friday.

The Tigers raced out to a 42-26 halftime lead and edged the Gents 39-36 in the second half to finish off the win. Centenary shot a season-low 28.6 % (20-70) from the floor, made just 6-19 3-point baskets (31.6 %), and finished 16-24 at the free-throw line for 66.7 %. Colorado College shot the ball very well, fishing 50.7 % from the floor (34-67) but were cold from outside, making only 4-18 attempts from beyond the arc for 22.2 % and went 9-13 at the FT line for 69.2 %.
Colorado College finished with a decisive advantage on the glass, outrebounding Centenary 54-37, and finished with 16 assists, six steals, and five blocked shots. The Gents tallied nine assists, nine steals, and blocked two shots. The Tiges turned the ball over 16 times which led to 13 Centenary points and the Gents managed the ball well, only turning it over nine times which the Tigers turned into nine points.
The Tigers dominated inside, finishing with a whopping 54-18 edge in points in the paint and the Tigers' bench outscored the Gents' 21-16. Each team scored six second-chance points and the Tigers finished with a 15-8 advantage in fastbreak points.
Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) led the Gents with 19 points and Asher Nofziger matched him to lead the way for the Tigers. Junior F Me'Khai Taylor (New Orleans, La.) scored a season-best 10 points, freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) had eight and freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) scored seven.
Sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) also had seven and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) added six. Freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) and freshman G/F Ashton Savoie (Lake Charles, La.) each shipped in two and freshman G Ryan Spears (Pearland, Texas) scored one.
Ty Hendler (16), Russell MacFarlane (15), and Terrion Benson (11) all joined Nofziger in double figures and Ryan Krantz finished with eight. Christian Drummond scored four and four Tigers scored two points each. Nofziger grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for a double-double and Addison had 10 to lead the Gents.
Taylor played 24 minutes and was 2-6 from the floor and 6-7 at the FT line with nine rebounds, a blocked shot, and a steal. His previous season high in points was eight which he accomplished twice. Beverly recorded his team-high 22nd double-digit performance of the season and has done so in 11-straight games. He was 7-15 from the floor, 2-2 from beyond the arc, and 3-6 at the FT line in 28 minutes with three rebounds, three steals, an assist, and a blocked shot.
