Gents Fall 82-77 To Tornados On Friday
The Centenary men's basketball team fell 82-77 to the Concordia University Tornados on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside the Gold Dome.
Shreveport - The Centenary men's basketball team fell 82-77 to the Concordia University Tornados on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside the Gold Dome.
The Gents (4-12, 2-5 SCAC) held the Tornados (14-2, 7-0 SCAC) to a season low in points as the visitors entered Friday's play third in the country in scoring offense, averaging a staggering 106.4 PPG and have scored 100 or more 10 times this season. Centenary is now 1-5 at home this season while Concordia is 4-0 on the road. Concordia led 36-34 at halftime and outscored Centenary 46-43 in the second half.
Centenary shot 46.7 % (28-60) from the floor, 26.9 % (7-26) from 3-point range, and 87.5 % (14-16) at the free-throw line while Concordia finished 40.5 % (30-74) overall, just 22.2 % (4-18) from beyond the arc, and 81.8 % (18-22) from the FT line. The Tornados outrebounded the Gents 41-37 and finished with a 50-42 advantage in points in the paint.
The Gents turned the ball over 20 times which led to 23 Concordia points and the visitors turned it over 11 times which the Gents turned into 12 points. Centenary finished with a 20-12 edge in fastbreak points, Concordia outscored Centenary 16-6 in second-chance points and 18-7 in bench points.
Junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) led the Gents with a season-high 25 points as he finished 10-13 from the floor, 3-6 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 at the FT line in 32 minutes. Coleman added six rebounds, two blocked shots, and a steal. Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) scored 22 and played all 40 minutes as he finished 7-15 from the floor and 6-6 from the FT line with a pair of treys. Beverly reached double figures for the 14th time this season and notched his eighth game of 20+ points. He added four assists, three steals, and two rebounds.
Freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) scored 11 in his 38 minutes as he finished 4-11 from the floor and 2-2 at the FT line with one trey. The rookie reached double figures for the 11th time this season and added five assists, a rebound, and a steal. Sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) scored seven and grabbed nine rebounds in 31 minutes with three assists and a blocked shot as he finished 2-3 from the floor and 3-4 at the FT line.
Freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) scored five points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in his 38 minutes. Junior F Me'Khai Taylor (New Orleans, La.) scored seven points and had three rebounds and a pair of assists in his 14 minutes off the bench.
Joey Ramirez led the Tornados and all scorers with 31 points and he was joined in double figures by Jaiden Gastile (13) and Anariss Brandon (11). Aaron San Miguel added seven, Cameron Thompson six, and Darone Leakes four. Five others scored two points each.
The first half featured multiple early ties and lead changes before the Tornados opened a 21-12 lead at the 10:28 mark. The Gents' only lead came after a Coleman trey to make it 3-2 Centenary with 18:23 on the clock. A basket at the 7:06 mark made it 28-16 Concordia, but Centenary began to chip away. A layup by Taylor cut the Gents' deficit to just four at 34-30 with 1:51 remaining, capping a 14-6 run. Leading 36-30 after a pair of free throws by Leakes with just over a minute left in the half, a layup by Coleman and two free throws by Braden made it 36-34 as the teams went into the halftime locker room engaged in a tight battle.
Centenary cut its deficit to 43-40 following a three-point play by Beverly early in the second half, but Concordia responded with an 11-4 run to take a 54-44 lead with 14:14 remaining. The Tornados held a 64-50 lead with 10:52 to play and 72-58 at the 6:05 mark after a Ramirez layup. But the Gents went on a 16-5 run over the next six+ minutes capped by an Addison layup with only 24 seconds remaining to make it 77-74. The Tornados, however, made key free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
