Ladies Come Up Short Versus Patriots On Tuesday

Shreveport - The Centenary women's basketball team lost 68-60 to the Arlington Baptist University Patriots in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening inside the Gold Dome.
The Ladies (1-4) led 18-10 over the Patriots (4-2) after an impressive first quarter but the visitors outscored the Ladies 18-14 in the second period to cut their deficit to 32-28 at halftime. ABU finished with an 18-12 advantage in the third quarter to take a 46-44 lead headed to the final 10 minutes. The Patriots outscored the Ladies 22-16 in the fourth quarter to seal the win in a game that featured nine ties and six lead changes.
The Patriots finished with a decisive advantage in rebounds, 53-33, and outscored the Ladies in the paint, 40-30. Centenary turned the ball over 18 times and ABU turned it over 15 times as the Patriots scored 17 points off of TO's and the Ladies scored 13. The Ladies finished with 12 assists, seven steals and five blocked shots while the Patriots had six assists, 12 steals, and blocked three shots. ABU finished with a 14-10 advantage in second-chance points and 10-8 in fast break points and the Ladies' bench contributed 17 points and the ABU reserves scored 10.
The Ladies shot 38.3 % (23-60) from the floor, 9-11 from the FT line and 5-18 from beyond the arc. The Patriots shot 35.7 % (25-70) from the field, 17-28 from the FT line (60.7 %) and made just one trey in 15 attempts.
Freshman G Nakaylyn Wells (Nacogdoches, Texas) led all scorers with 21 points as she played all 40 minutes and was 9-17 from the floor and 3-3 from the free-throw line with six rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Four Patriots scored in double figures led by 16 from Paris Beard. Sa'Nya Green scored 14 and Laila Stewart and MyLeah Young each scored 11. Zoe Senganya added eight and Kaylee Bennett scored six.
Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) scored nine points and sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) and freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.) each scored eight. Senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) and sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) each scored five and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) had four. Wells and senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) each had six rebounds to lead the team and Rivera had five.
Rivera played 23 minutes and finished with three steals and two assists, Barrow had a pair of assists and a steal, and Barrow had two assists and one steal. Cabrera was 3-6 from the floor and 2-3 from beyond the arc with an assist, a blocked shot, and a steal. Powell had two assists and a steal and Cortez finished with three rebounds and two blocked shots.
The Ladies will return to action next Tuesday against the Wiley University Wildcats at 5 PM in Marshall, Texas.
