Ladies Fall Short At Wiley, 67-59
The Centenary women's basketball team lost 67-59 to the Wiley University Wildcats in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening inside Alumni Gymnasium in Marshall, Texas.
Marshall, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team lost 67-59 to the Wiley University Wildcats in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening inside Alumni Gymnasium in Marshall, Texas.
Centenary (1-5) is now 1-2 on the road this season while the Wildcats (5-2) are now 3-2 at home. The teams were meeting for the first time since Nov. 11, 2023 when Wiley recorded a 69-35 win at home.
Freshman G Nakaylyn Wells (Nacogdoches, Texas) and senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) combined to score 24 of the Ladies' 59 points as Wells had 13 and Barrow finished with 11. Four Wiley players reached double figures, led by a game-high 15 points from Cailan Hale. Mia Thomas scored 12, Brandy Jones scored 11, and Kelechi Dike had 10. Dike and Keimora Banks each had 11 rebounds which were a game-high.
The Ladies shot 30.9 % (21-68) from the floor and the Wildcats went 22-69 for 31.9 %. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc as Centenary finished 4-20 and Wiley was 5-22. The Ladies went 13-19 at the FT line and the Wildcats were 18-29. Wiley outrebounded Centenary 59-45 and the teams combined for 41 turnovers – 23 by Wiley and 19 by Centenary.
The Ladies won the battle inside, finishing with 30 points in the paint to the Wildcats' 24, finished with a 16-13 edge in second-chance points, and 5-2 in fast break points. Wiley's bench scored 28 points and Centenary's chipped in 22. The Ladies scored 20 points off of turnovers and the Wildcats finished with 16.
Wiley led 18-10 after the first quarter and Centenary outscored the Wildcats 14-9 in the second as Wiley led 27-24 at halftime. The Ladies outscored the Wildcats 19-12 in the third period to take a 43-39 lead headed to the final 10 minutes. Wiley, though, finished with a 12-point advantage (28-16) in the fourth quarter to seal the comeback win.
Wells played 34 minutes and finished with seven rebounds and four assists and went 3-3 at the FT line while Barrow played 23 minutes and hit a pair of treys in four attempts and finished 3-4 at the FT line with three rebounds and an assist. Sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) and senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) each scored nine points and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) scored five. Sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.), sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.), and senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) each scored four points.
Rivera grabbed four rebounds in her 25 minutes with a trey, three steals, and two assists. Stokes was 3-6 from the floor with five rebounds, four steals, and an assist while Senat grabbed six boards, had two steals, and one blocked shot. Cabrera had two rebounds, an assist, and a steal and Duhon had six rebounds, was 2-2 at the FT line with two steals and an assist. Powell played 25 minutes and had two assists, two rebounds and two steals.
The Ladies will open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play at LeTourneau University on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 PM in Longview, Texas.
