Ladies Fall To Yellow Jackets 77-40
The Centenary women's basketball team fell 77-40 to the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Tuesday evening in a non-conference game inside the Gold Dome.
Shreveport- The Centenary women's basketball team fell 77-40 to the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Tuesday evening in a non-conference game inside the Gold Dome.
The Ladies (2-13) lost their eighth game in a row while the Yellow Jackets (9-10) won their third in a row. Tuesday marked the second meeting between the teams this season after the Yellow Jackets beat the Ladies 85-40 in Brownwood, Texas on Dec. 12. Centenary fell to 0-5 at home while Howard Payne improved to 5-4 on the road.
Howard Payne edged Centenary 18-16 in the first quarter and then used a decisive 22-5 second quarter advantage to lead 40-21 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets then outscored the Ladies 22-14 in the third and 15-5 in the final period to cruise to the road win.
The Ladies shot 26.8 % (15-56) from the floor, 27.3 % (6-22) from beyond the arc, and 66.7 % (4-6) from the free-throw line while the Yellow Jackets finished 24-58 (41.4 %) from the floor, 33.3 % (7-21) from beyond the arc, and 81.5 % (22-27) from the FT line. Howard Payne outrebounded Centenary 45-33 and finished with advantages in points in the paint (28-12) and second-chance points (14-7).
The Ladies turned the ball over 23 times compared to 11 for the Yellow Jackets. Howard Payne turned the Ladies' 23 miscues into 28 points while Centenary scored eight off of HPU's 11. The Ladies finished with six fastbreak points to the Yellow Jackets' four and HPU's bench scored 26 points compared to 18 for the Ladies.
Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) led the Ladies with 13 points and was the only Centenary player to score in double figures. Sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) had seven, senior G Savannah Stowers (Waller, Texas) scored five, and sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) and sophomore G Madison Fontenot (Mamou, La.) each had three.
Four players scored two points each - senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas), senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.), freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.), and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas). Freshman F/C Dajalee LeBlanc (Crowley, La.) scored one point.
Four Howard Payne players scored in double figures, led by 15 from Azaylee Santos. Caitlyn Parson had 13 and Taylor McAfee and Kaley Nicholson each scored 10. Parson pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for an impressive double-double and Caitlyn Panuco had 10 rebounds, nine points, five assists, and a steal.
Centenary will return to action versus Concordia University in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday at 7:30 PM.
