Ladies Fall At McMurry On Friday
The Centenary women's basketball team lost 85-34 to the McMurry University War Hawks on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside Kimbrell Arena.
Abilene, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team lost 85-34 to the McMurry University War Hawks on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside Kimbrell Arena.
The Ladies (2-9, 1-2 SCAC) are now 2-5 on the road this season while the War Hawks (9-2, 3-0 SCAC) is now 5-0 at home.
McMurry dominated the game, shooting 44.0 % (33-75) from the floor, hitting 13-37 attempts from beyond the arc, and 6-8 from the free-throw line while outrebounding Centenary 42-35. The Ladies finished just 13-49 (26.5 %) from the floor, 2-20 from 3-point range, and made 6-7 at the FT line.
The War Hawks outscored the Ladies in the paint, 32-18, finished with a 31-12 advantage in bench points, and forced 34 Centenary turnovers which they turned into 45 points. McMurry turned the ball over 18 times which Centenary turned into only four points. The War Hawks had 22 fast break points to none for the Ladies and each team scored 11 second-chance points. Centenary totaled 10 steals, four assists, and one blocked shot while McMurry tallied 21 assists, 19 steals, and five blocked shots.
McMurry raced out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter and outscored Centenary 18-11 to lead 38-20 at halftime. The War Hawks then put the game away in the third, outscoring the Ladies 20-2 and finished with a 22-12 edge in the final 10 minutes to cruise to the win.
Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) led the Ladies in scoring with 10 points, sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) each scored six, and freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.) had four. Senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) and sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) each scored three and sophomore G Madison Fontenot (Mamou, La.) added two.
Barrow played 30 minutes and was 4-8 from the floor with a pair of treys, three rebounds, an assist, and a steal as she reached double figures for the fifth time this season. Duhon played 22 minutes and was 4-4 at the FT line with five rebounds, an assist, and a steal and Senat pulled down a season and career-high seven rebounds in her 21 minutes off the bench with one steal.
Cortez played 17 minutes and was 2-3 from the floor with three rebounds and a steal, Stokes was 1-4 from the floor and 1-2 at the FT line in 20 minutes with four rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot. Cabrera had a season-high four steals, three rebounds, and two assists in 27 minutes and Fontenot grabbed a pair of boards in her 14 minutes.
Helana Chadwick was the leading scorer in the game with 21 points on 9-14 shooting from the floor in 28 minutes. She hit three treys, grabbed five rebounds, dished out five assists, and had three steals. Jordan Bravo (14), Aryana Cleveland (12), and Gracie Hunter (11) joined Chadwick in double figures. Jordan Gillespie had a team-high seven rebounds that matches Senat for most in the game.
The Ladies will wrap up the weekend at Schreiner on Sunday (2 PM) in Kerrville, Texas.
