Ladies Open SCAC Play With Comeback Win At LeTourneau
The Centenary women's basketball team opened league play with a 55-50 comeback victory over the LeTourneau University YellowJackets on Tuesday night inside Solheim Arena.
Longview, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 55-50 comeback victory over the LeTourneau University YellowJackets on Tuesday night inside Solheim Arena.
The Ladies (2-5, 1-0 SCAC) trailed the YellowJackets (1-5, 0-1 SCAC) by a score of 50-46 with 2:14 remaining and then went on a 9-0 run to finish the game. Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to give the Ladies a 53-50 lead and sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) hit two free throws with six seconds remaining to seal the win. Barrow led all scorers with 13 points.
Tuesday marked the first time that the Ladies won their conference opener since the 2021-22 season when they recorded a 62-59 win on Dec. 9, 2021 over the University of Dallas Crusaders in Irving, Texas.
Centenary led 10-7 after a low-scoring first quarter and LeTourneau responded by outscoring the Ladies 13-8 to take a 20-18 lead at halftime. The Ladies edged the YellowJackets 18-16 in the third period as the game headed to the fourth quarter tied at 36-36. Centenary then outscored LeTourneau 19-14 in the fourth quarter. The game featured 18 ties and 20 lead changes.
The Ladies shot 30 % (18-60) from the floor for the game and the YellowJackets finished 33.3 % (20-60). Centenary was 4-21 from beyond the arc and 15-22 from the FT line while LeTourneau was 0-17 from 3-point range and 10-15 from the FT line. Centenary edged LeTourneau in a close rebounding battle, 43-41. The Ladies recorded 16 steals, nine assists and three blocked shots and the YellowJackets tallied 14 assists and 13 steals and did not block a shot.
The YellowJackets edged the Ladies 26-24 in points in the paint and finished with advantages in second-chance points (12-6), fast break points (12-8) and bench points (23-18). Centenary and LeTourneau each turned the ball over 22 times as the Ladies scored 19 points off of the YellowJackets' miscues while LETU scored 14.
Barrow was 6-13 from the floor in 32 minutes with four rebounds, Rivera had nine with four rebounds, two steals and an assist and finished 5-6 from the FT line in 20 minutes, and freshman G Nakaylyn Wells (Nacogdoches, Texas) joined Barrow in double figures with 11 points. She played 35 minutes and had four rebounds, five steals, an assist, and a blocked shot and finished 2-2 at the FT line.
Senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) had four points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist in 24 minutes, senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) had two points, six rebounds, and two blocks in 18 minutes, and sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) had a solid game with seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds with four assists and four steals in 28 minutes. Sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) scored two points and grabbed four rebounds with three steals and two assists, junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) grabbed one rebound in seven minutes and freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.) had six points and a career-best six rebounds in 15 minutes.
Brooklyn Iman (11) and Makenzie Covey (10) reached double figures for LeTourneau, Kylie Weeks added eight, Madeline Underwood six and Marina Espinosa scored five. Sallier Moser chipped in four and three players scored two points each – Fayth Fry, Robbi Martinez, and Breeanna Hoffman. Iman pulled down a team-best eight rebounds and Martinez and Weeks each had seven.
Wells had a pair of baskets in the first minute of the fourth quarter to break the 36-36 tie and give the Ladies a 40-36 lead. LeTourneau then went on an 8-0 run to take a 44-40 lead at the 7:26 mark. Rivera made a layup to make it 44-42 and then Cortez sank a pair of clutch FT's to tie the score at 44-44 with 5:27 left in the game. A layup by Underwood with 4:13 remaining gave the YellowJackets a 46-44 lead and Rivera tied it at 46-46 with 3:49 on the clock.
A Hoffman layup and a basket by Covey at the 2:14 mark made it 50-46 LeTourneau but Barrow's layup with 1:58 remaining made it 50-48. Just seconds later, Barrow's layup tied it with 1:13 left and 31 seconds later, her trey put the Ladies ahead 53-50 for their first lead since the 9:16 mark when they were up 40-36.
LeTourneau called a timeout and then Weeks missed a potential tying trey as Covey rebounded. Weeks missed a layup and Wells rebounded for the Ladies. Rivera missed a layup and Iman pulled down the board and the YellowJackets called a timeout with just 20 seconds remaining. Espinosa missed a 3-point attempt and Rivera rebounded and was fouled by Moser. Rivera then stepped to the FT line and calmly hit both to give the Ladies a 55-50 lead and sealed the win.
Centenary will return to action next Tuesday at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas at 5 PM.
