Ladies Lose At Schreiner On Sunday
The Centenary women's basketball team lost 64-32 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside Stephens Family Arena.
Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team lost 64-32 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game inside Stephens Family Arena.
The Ladies (2-10, 1-3 SCAC) are now 2-6 on the road this season after falling 85-34 to the McMurry University War Hawks on Friday night in Abilene, Texas. The Mountaineers improve to 3-10 and 2-2 in league play with Sunday's win.
The Ladies shot 27.7 % (13-47) from the floor while the Mountaineers went 35.5 % (22-62). Both teams struggled from beyond the arc as Centenary finished 3-9 and Schreiner 6-25. The Ladies struggled mightily from the free-throw line (3-13) while Schreiner was 14-18. The Mountaineers outrebounded the Ladies 45-36.
Schreiner outscored Centenary in the paint, 28-20, 35-13 in bench points, 7-2 in second-chance points, and 14-2 in fast break points. The Ladies turned the ball over 24 times which the Mountaineers turned into 27 points while Schreiner committed 11 turnovers which led to six Centenary points. The Ladies finished with seven assists and two steals and the Mountaineers had 15 assists, 14 steals, and three blocked shots.
Senior G Savannah Stowers (Waller, Texas) led the Ladies in scoring with eight points and was followed by sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) with seven. Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) and senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) each scored five and three players scored two points each - sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.), sophomore G Madison Fontenot (Mamou, La.), and freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.). Sophomore F Laijah Rockward (Houma, La.) had one point and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) was held scoreless but had two rebounds.
Stokes had a team-high six rebounds, Barrow and Duhon each had five, Cortez had four, Cabrera three, Rockward and Stowers two, and Fontenot had one board. Cabrera led the way with three assists and Duhon and Stowers each had one steal.
Brie Sosa (12 points) was the lone Schreiner player to reach double figures but a dozen players scored and five players scored nine or more points. All 12 of Sosa's points came on four treys and she added five rebounds and three assists.
The Mountaineers took early control of the game as they outscored the Ladies 14-4 in the first period and edged the Maroon and White 12-11 in the second to take a 26-15 halftime. Schreiner then extended its lead with an 18-6 edge in the third and finished off with a 20-11 advantage in the final 10 minutes.
Centenary is back on the road next weekend for games at Austin College (Jan. 16) and the University of Dallas (Jan. 17).
