Ladies Lose At Dallas On Saturday
The Centenary women's basketball team lost 72-52 to the University of Dallas Crusaders on Saturday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Maher Center.
Irving, Texas - The Centenary women's basketball team lost 72-52 to the University of Dallas Crusaders on Saturday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Maher Center.
The Ladies (2-12, 1-5 SCAC) lost their seventh game in a row and dropped to 2-8 on the road this season. The Crusaders improved to 3-12 and 2-4 in league play.
Dallas led 16-10 after the first quarter and outscored the Ladies 23-18 in the second period to take a 39-28 halftime lead. A 17-9 advantage in the third by the Crusaders allowed them to extend their lead to 56-37 headed to the final 10 minutes where they edged the Ladies 16-15 to seal the win.
The Ladies shot 41.0 % (16-39) from the floor, 5-12 from beyond the arc, and 15-22 from the free-throw line while the Crusaders finished 26-28 from the field for 38.2 %, 5-14 from 3-point range, and 15-20 at the FT line. Dallas outrebounded Centenary 39-23 and finished with advantages in points in the paint (30-14), second-chance points (12-4), and fastbreak points (8-6).
The Ladies turned the ball over 19 times that led to 13 Dallas points and the Crusaders' 12 turnovers led to five points for Centenary. The Ladies' bench scored 18 points and the Crusaders' reserves chipped in 16. Centenary finished with seven assists, five steals, and five blocked shots while Dallas had 11 assists and seven steals but did not block a shot.
Senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) led the Ladies with 13 points and senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) joined her in double figures with 10. Freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.) scored six and senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) and senior G Savannah Stowers (Waller, Texas) each scored five.
Sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) and sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) each had four, sophomore G Madison Fontenot (Mamou, La.) and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) each scored two and senior G Paige Stowers (Waller, Texas) scored one.
Powell played 23 minutes and was 4-5 from the floor, 2-2 from beyond the arc, and 3-4 at the FT line with two rebounds and a steal. Stokes was 2-4 from the floor and 6-10 at the FT line in 21 minutes with eight boards, an assist, and a steal. Barrow played 30 minutes and finished with three assists, two rebounds, one steal, and one trey and Cabrera finished 2-2 at the FT line with one assist, one rebound, and one steal. Duhon had three blocked shots, two rebounds, and an assist with a trey and Cortez had three rebounds and a blocked shot.
Gabriella Barrera and Hailey Hawthorne each scored 16 points to lead all scorers and five Crusaders scored six+ points. Kathleen Santos grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and Maria Podskarbi had 10.
The Ladies are back in action on Tuesday at home against Howard Payne University for a non-conference contest in the Gold Dome at 5:30 PM.
