The Ladies (2-7, 1-0 SCAC) and YellowJackets (3-7, 0-1 SCAC) are meeting for the second time this season after Centenary opened league play with a 55-50 comeback victory over LeTourneau on Dec. 2 in Longview, Texas.
The Ladies trailed the YellowJackets by a score of 50-46 with 2:14 remaining and then went on a 9-0 run to finish the game. Senior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to give the Ladies a 53-50 lead and sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) hit two free throws with six seconds remaining to seal the win. Barrow led all scorers with 13 points.
That win last month marked the first time that the Ladies won their conference opener since the 2021-22 season when they recorded a 62-59 win on Dec. 9, 2021 over the University of Dallas Crusaders in Irving, Texas.
Centenary led 10-7 after a low-scoring first quarter and LeTourneau responded by outscoring the Ladies 13-8 to take a 20-18 lead at halftime. The Ladies edged the YellowJackets 18-16 in the third period as the game headed to the fourth quarter tied at 36-36. Centenary then outscored LeTourneau 19-14 in the fourth quarter. The game featured 18 ties and 20 lead changes.
Centenary, 0-3 at home this season, will be back on its home court for the first time since a 68-60 loss to Arlington Baptist University on Nov. 18. The Ladies also have home losses to East Texas Baptist University (76-50) on Nov. 7 and Jarvis Christian University (59-52) on Nov. 10.
Centenary lost 85-40 to the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Dec. 12 in a non-conference game on the road in its last game. LeTourneau, 0-4 on the road this season, defeated Manchester 57-53 at home on Tuesday in its most recent action.
Centenary is averaging 51.8 PPG as a team so far this season and shooting 31.9 % from the floor, 25.6 % from 3-point range, and 69.7 % from the free-throw line. The Ladies, averaging 33.6 rebounds per game and 10.3 assists/game, are second in the SCAC in steals (10.4/game), fifth in FT %, and sixth in blocked shots (2.4/game).
Barrow averages 7.9 PPG followed by senior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) at 6.9 PPG, senior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) is averaging 6.4 PPG, and sophomore G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) averages 5.1 PPG.
Sophomore G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) and sophomore G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.) each average 4.4 PPG, freshman F Emily Cortez (Thibodaux, La.) is at 3.4 PPG and junior F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas) averages 2.2 PPG. Stokes is the Ladies' leading rebounder (5.6/game) Rivera leads in both assists (2.1) and steals (2.1), and Cortez and Stokes are tied for the team lead in blocked shots (0.9/game).
Mariana Espinosa (12.9 PPG) leads the YellowJackets in scoring and ranks seventh in the conference and Kylie Weeks (12.3 PPG) is second on the team and ninth in the SCAC. Makenzie Covey leads LeTourneau in rebounding (6.1) and is 18th in the league.
